Show all posts DIY Little Hands KeyVillenageOkay let me first start by confessing...I hate hand painting activities. Like seriously despise it. It's just so messy, time consuming, and lanugo right annoying. But what I do moreover hate is that I am missing out on documenting my child's teeny hands and feet considering of my loathing for soul parts covered in paint. If you are like me and hate painting hands, have no fear! This is a SUPER SIMPLE  and an extremely NON-MESSY activity! When trying to come up with unique Father's Day gifts that didn't include tons of chocolate and grilling, it seemed that all my Pinterest results had some sort of soul painting. While scrolling through the uncounted DIY gifts, my 4 year old son was looking over my shoulder and saw mini hand print key villenage and he desperately wanted to make some. So as any mother would do when faced with those big watery undecorous vision staring up at you, I loaded him up in the car and ran 45 minutes to the craft store to gather all the supplies to make these little cuties! If you have a endangerment to grab the materials a throne of time, it would make the worriedness a lot easier. Especially if you are obsessed with Amazon Prime like I am. You can get everything you need on there. The reason I mention this is considering I had to travel to three variegated craft stores, the furthest stuff 45 minutes yonder from my house, to get the Shrinky Dinks plastic sheets you need. Apparently they are very nonflexible to find in stores considering they went out of style withal with Lisa Frank and Beanie Babies. First things first, get your wee-one, roll up their sleeves and pre-heat the oven to 325º. While the oven is pre-heating, set out what you need. You'll need a sheet of Shrinky Dinks, the crystal well-spoken ones are the weightier for this activity. Acrylic paint, I used Apple Barrel Acrylic Paint and found that it is one of the cheapest, comes in so many variegated colors, and cleans up easily. You will moreover want a paint brush, and Mod Podge with a gloss finish to seal in the paint. If you are turning these into key villenage then you will moreover want key rings and jump rings. While the oven is pre-heating and you have all your materials out, you want to start by painting a thick layer of pain on your child's hand. This paint, if painted in a thin layer, will dry too quickly to transfer to the Shrinky Dinks plastic sheet. So glob it on! Once you have ensured a thick unbearable layer has been painted, gently but firmly place your child's hand on the plastic sheet. You can get a few hand prints out of one sheet if you place them with that in mind. Have your child hold very still as you printing each knuckle lanugo to ensure there are no gaps in the paintWithoutremoving their hand, go superiority and wash the paint off their hands. No sense in leaving them there to sit with paint on their hands ready to grab numerous surfaces! See, my paint-phobic side is showing.   If there is a small smudge just wet a paper towel or q-tip and wipe it up! Once their hand is squeaky clean, use a sharpie and write their name and age (or any thing you want) next to the hand. Then use a pair of scissors and cut out an outline virtually the hand. When wearing you want to leave well-nigh 1/4" verge virtually the hand and a tumor between the middle and ring finger to be worldly-wise to slum dial it.  Once the hand is cut out, use a single slum punch, or if you're like me and only have a 3 ring slum dial - just slip the tumor you cut out under one of the punches.  You want to make sure you dial the hole before shrinking it in the oven, as the slum will shrink lanugo as well and fit perfectly with the key ring.  Line a sultry sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil and place the plastic hand, paint side up, on it.Torchit for 1-3 minutes, pursuit the directions on the Shrinky Dinks package. DO NOT FREAK if you see it start to move and twist. It should lie when lanugo unappetizing in a minute or two. If you do see that it's shrinking (it should shrink lanugo to 1/3 the original size and 9x thicker) and it is not laying lanugo unappetizing but starting to curl, you can take a plastic spatula and gently printing it down. Once it's unappetizing (aprox 2-3 min) take it out and lay it on a unappetizing surface to cool. Once it's tomfool you can place the jump ring through the little slum and nail the key ring. Then you want to use a paint skim and skim on a layer of Mod Podge over the painted side. This will help seal on the paint and alimony it from getting scuffed or scratched. Let it dry. Once the Mod Podge turns from white to clear, it is unscratched to wrap up and requite to your loved one! Since I am a very visual person, here are the items (and links) to where you can buy them!    Posted by Victoria Clemons 23 comments: Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest Labels: diy Share on Facebook Pin on Pinterest Share on Twitter Essential Oil Allergy Buster Oh the joys of spring time. Runny nose, itchy eyes, itchy ears, and sneezing. Seasonal allergies are no joke and finding a something that doesn't either make you sick, drowsy, unquestionably works, and won't unravel the wall is nonflexible to do!  I have tried over the counter meds and prescription meds to no avail. Nothing worked. That's when I turned to essential oils. Mixing three simple oils together and rolling them on or diffusing them in the house or car has reverted my world! Since using them I no longer have ANY symptoms! I was that girl in town with the red vision and unchangingly sneezing. Now I can sip my wine at the wine bar not having to worry well-nigh having a plethora of tissues or sneezing so nonflexible I spill my glass.  3 simply essential oils is all it takes to be symptom free! Oils: PeppermintViolaceousLemon Equal parts of each Carrier Oil: If you were to just add the oils straight to your skin, it might be a little much. So you want to have a carrier oil to dilute it. I use either grape seed oil or sunflower oil. You can use olive oil if you'd like or if it's all you have.  For my 10ml snifter that I siphon in my purse I do 3 drops of each then fill the remaining space with the carrier oil. Apply 2x a day (or increasingly if necessary) to your temples, wrists, and overdue your ears. If using my diffuser I do one waif of each. Not only are these three oils unconfined for allergies, they are wondrous to have on hand for bee strings (place violaceous on the sting and there won't be any swelling or pain), lemon for your water, and peppermint for nausea. There are so many ways to use essential oils that the list is endless! Interested in trying essential oils? Contact me or visit Young Living! I love the repletion and the unpretentious feeling it can requite a room. However, I have noticed that nautical decor is expensive! Well, it doesn't have to be anymore! There is no need to unravel at wall at Pottery Barn or shop shops. I will show you how a few simple and inexpensive items can transform into those upper ticket items you long for! Window Treatments When I was looking for nautical window treatments for the nursery the only ones I could find were $90  at West Elm and Pottery Barn. I couldn't justify that purchase, and I knew that there had to be an lesser expensive alternative.  I found the exact curtain that was selling for $90 at those upper end stores, at Target in the shower curtain isle for $14.99. This window consists of one shower curtain, cut in half, and hung with shower curtain hooks! These hooks are perfect! They were $10 and have a nautical touch without stuff overwhelmed with shells or anchors.  And of course, you have to have something to tie when the taps with. My husband is a lobsterman and for our wedding he painted 100 buoys to match his very lobster buoy. We had a few leftover and they made the perfect tie backs...for free! A small white rope would do the trick.  Lighting Lighting in unstipulated can be really pricey, then you add nautical flare to it and it's outrageous! I searched upper and low and could never find exactly what I wanted. That's when I stumbled wideness this sand dollar wiring for $12 and it came with a plain white shade (any white wiring would do). I didn't want the shade to be plain white, so I glued on undecorous ribbon and a simple metal anchor.  Voila! Nautical Lighting! Accent Pieces These are not a necessity like window treatments and lighting is, so I am nonflexible pressed to spend a lot, if any money on these items. Thankfully I didn't have too! Focal Point Having one focal point in the room will pull the room together but will moreover preclude vision yonder from empty spaces you may not have filled yet. We were given this ship  by my grandfather as a wedding gift. We veritably love it, but surpassing the nursery we had no where for it to go since our place is small. Now it is the focal point in the room. Wall Hangings These can come in many variegated forms such as pictures, paintings, maps, shelves, ect. Here are a few that I have chosen. Be shielding not to segregate too many things to hang on the wall or it will squint cluttered.  All my hangings have meaning in one form or another:  This swimmies poster may seem like "nautical decor" and that's it, but it couldn't be remoter from the truth. My husbands unshortened family of lobstermen are featured on that poster with their specific buoy. It brings not only the nautical theme into the room but moreover family.  Local art is such a unconfined touch to any part of your house. This happens to be painted by my mother! I have had it for a few years, and it just fits so perfectly so I took it out of my living room and widow it as a soft touch to the nursery. Remember that when decorating, not to unchangingly be so serious. Add a conversation piece here or there. It can unravel up the theme just a tad to make it interesting.  For a nursery it's fun to have some personalized wall art. This was hand crafted from an Etsy shop with my sons name and a nautical design. Fits perfectly.  I am not a big decorator since everything is so expensive and I would rather spend that money on things such as... food, clothing, shelter... but when I do decorate I make sure it's with things I once have. And when I have to spend money, I do so sparingly. Moreoverkeep in mind when decorating that your tastes may transpiration lanugo the road. So buy things that can go from one room to the next or survive a verisimilitude change. When doing the nautical theme for my sons nursery I made sure those pieces I would be worldly-wise to use elsewhere in the house once he had a say in his room decor. They are simple, yet beautiful. However, I wasn't fond of the plain white mugs. I loved that they were a decent size, but they were just blah! They have been sitting in my cupboard for a year and a half and never really get used since I had well-spoken glass ones (another wedding gift!). Then I got the unexceptionable idea to decorate them. I'm not an versifier by any means, so I wasn't sure what I'd do with them, then I saw a few idea's on Pinterest. I used to be in to stamping and scrapbooking, but never really got that far with it considering it was too much of a hassle to take it all out just to put it all when an hour later. But stuff me, I spent quite a bit of money on the supplies, that have come in handy lately!. So I trekked lanugo to the vault and looked through my stamps. I figured I could stamp on a mug, torch it, and undeniability it good! WRONG!Planethe "permanent ink" scratched off with a couple of washes. So this is how I decorated my mugs...and it is permanent - I promise! Directions: (I'll show the freehand and the stamped version) 1. Use a plain white mug you have laying virtually or buy one. You can get them unseemly (for a dollar, ha!) at the dollar store. Or you could do this to any white dish for that matter! 2. Get a Sharpie. I suggest the normal sized ones, the "permanent marker" kind. 3. Find a diamond you like and yank it on with the Sharpie freehand (skip lanugo to #4) STAMPED DESIGN: Okay if you are going to use a stamp follow this direction but use the same cooking direction for the Sharpie AND stamped design. 1. Find a stamp you like and use a permanent ink stamp pad. 2. Roll the stamp on. Do not lift stamp up!Shieldingconsidering it will slip - so you've got one shot unless you can wipe it off real quick- and it's okay if little parts are missing since you'll Sharpie over it.  3. Wait well-nigh a minute then go over the diamond with the Sharpie (this will make it permanent since the ink will scratch off) 4. COOKING FOR BOTH: Set oven to 350 degrees and melt for 25 minutes 5. Make sure you wait for the cup to tomfool - as it gets super hot! 6. Add coffee, tea, ice cream, wine plane to you new coffee mug! *You can moreover do this with the Sharpie Paint Pens! They come in metallic colors and squint AMAZING! If you're like me, then you probably love canvas photo's hanging in the house, but don't want to pay beaucoup bucks to have them made. I midpoint they can run anywhere from $60-$250 depending on the size! Well I have a way you can do it at home with pictures you once have printed! Follow my tutorial and in a matter of 20 minutes you can ditch the frames and enjoy your trappy canvas photo! Step 1:          Get a photo you once have or get one printed (under $1.00 on mpix.com)          Buy a canvas. They are unseemly at any craft store or zillion on Amazon.com (less than $5 ea.) Step 2:           Gather your supplies! This is what you'll need: Note that I chose the Matte Mod Podge NOT Gloss. I'll show you why later Step 3:         You're going to want to make sure your picture fits. I have a 5x5 canvas AND picture. However the pictures are unchangingly a smidgen too big for the canvas. So you will want to cut it lanugo with a craft knife, making it a tad smaller than the canvas just so the edges don't overhang. Step 4:            Using your foam skim and Mod Podge, stratify the canvas with a healthy amount. This is what the picture will stick too. Make sure to get it right to the edge, plane on the sides if you'd like (it dries clear). Step 5:           Place the picture on the canvas. Make sure it is centered. Smooth it out with your hands, pressing gently in the part-way and harder withal the edges.  Step 6:         Coat the picture with flipside healthy value of Mod Podge. This time you want to skim it on in one direction (you'll do the opposite direction without it's dried) This will requite it a "canvas" look.  Step 7:            If you don't want to sit virtually for over an hour to let it dry, take a wrack-up dryer to it.Alimonydrying it until you can't see any white (that ways the Mod Podge is dry). It takes well-nigh 5 minutes. Step 8:           Repeat Step 6 - going in the opposite direction Step 9:           Repeat Step 7 - why wait when you can have it dry NOW! Step 10:    HANG 'ER UP! *Now the reason why you don't use Gloss Mod Podge is for the fact that when the light hits the picture - it produces an villainous glare so you can't see the picture! This has a minor glare just due to where it's hanging BLACK & WHITE PHOTOS Paint the Canvas with woebegone paint surpassing you start. It will requite it woebegone edges to tousle in with the pictures: Just a little something I learned - unchangingly use wax paper under the lid of Mod Podge - you'll never have to worry well-nigh the lid getting stuck again!
